Biography

Ismail Azzam Wajeeh is the Project Manager for MNU working on the Project PROMISE funded by EU under the Switch-Asia Programme. Azzam is a project management and human science enthusiast and holds a Masters degree in Human Science specializing in Sociology and Anthropology. He also has a Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honors) degree in Business Management.

Azzam was the Managing Director of Aasandha Company of Maldives from 2022 to 2023, overseeing the administration and reform of the National Social Healthcare Financing Scheme covering all Maldivians. Azzam served as CEO of the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) of Maldives for 5 years from 2017 to 2022, providing strategic, financial and operational leadership to the Agency in implementing its mandate. He had actively worked with donor agencies like World Bank, WHO, unicef and other UN agencies to introduce and implement major reforms to the social protection sector of Maldives. He also served as Technical Advisor of NSPA from 2015 to 2016. Prior to his tenure at NSPA, he worked as Project Coordinator for the Pension and Social Protection Administration Project (PSPAP) financed by the World Bank from 2012 to 2015, and was the Project Manager for the Tsunami Recovery and Reconstruction Project at the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Marine Resources in 2009. He has also served as a Research Consultant for the TVET Authority of the Ministry of Human resources Youth and Sports (2009-2010).

Azzam has publications under the broader theme of epistemology and strategic governance and is also a guest speaker and part time lecturer on subjects such as Social Protection, Social Policy, Healthcare Finance, Comparative Politics and Public Policy. He is a local contextualization specialist having conducted research across all atolls of Maldives and personally visited all inhabited islands at least twice while on private or work-related trips.
