Dr. Asma Ibrahim Sulaiman

Biography

Dr. Asma Ibrahim Sulaiman (PhD, MPHM, BN) currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health at the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Maldives National University. With a wealth of experience and expertise, she has made significant contributions to both academia and healthcare administration.

Previously holding the esteemed position of Dean at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Villa College, Dr. Asma demonstrated exemplary leadership by establishing a faculty and devising comprehensive undergraduate and postgraduate programs in nursing, public health, and pharmacy. Her managerial responsibilities extended to overseeing the successful development and implementation of these programs.

Beyond her administrative roles, Dr. Asma is actively involved in teaching various modules across undergraduate and postgraduate health sciences programs. Her commitment to academic excellence is evident through her engagement in research endeavors and academic supervision for BSc, MSc Nursing, and Public Health research students.

Dr. Asma’s extensive career includes noteworthy times as a Staff Nurse & Midwife at regional and tertiary level hospitals. Notably, she served as the Head of the Health Protection Agency in the Maldives, where she played a pivotal role in implementing national and international public health programs and activities, focusing on preventive measures throughout the country.

Further showcasing her dedication to public health, she served the role of Director-General of Maldivian Blood Services. In this capacity, she provided essential services to patients with blood-borne disorders, such as Thalassemia and other hemoglobinopathies.

Dr. Asma has also been an active member of key committees in the health sector, including the Maldives Nursing and Midwifery Council, Maldives Allied Health Council, and Maldivian Blood Council. Her involvement in these committees highlights her commitment to shaping national policies and contributing to the formulation of healthcare standards.

With a PhD in Public Health, Dr. Asma Ibrahim Sulaiman has made immense contributions to both curative and preventive health services in the Maldives. Her outstanding career reflects a deep commitment to advancing healthcare education, research, and policy development in the pursuit of better public health outcomes.
