The Maldives National University (MNU) successfully hosted another session of the MNU Speaker Series – Student Edition, featuring Aishath Shadhun Shakeel, a student leader and Bachelor of Business student, who shared her personal journey through a talk titled “The Power of Choice.”
The session explored the decisions students make throughout their educational journey and how those choices can influence their academic experiences, personal development and future opportunities. Drawing on her own experiences, Shadhun reflected on the choices she made throughout her studies and the impact these decisions had on her life.
She spoke openly about the challenges and obstacles she encountered along the way and how each experience contributed to her growth. Rather than allowing difficulties to prevent her from moving forward, Shadhun used them as opportunities to learn, adapt and become stronger. Her journey demonstrated how resilience can develop through challenging experiences and how setbacks can become valuable lessons for personal and professional growth.
A key message from the session was that while students may not always be able to control the challenges they encounter, they can choose how they respond to them. The decisions they make, the lessons they draw from their experiences and their willingness to continue moving forward can all contribute to shaping their future.
As a student leader, Shadhun also highlighted the importance of taking ownership of one’s educational journey. Her experience demonstrated that university life extends beyond completing a programme of study; it is also an opportunity to develop confidence, leadership, decision-making skills and the resilience needed to navigate life’s challenges.
The session supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 – Quality Education by providing students with opportunities for personal development, peer learning, leadership and essential life skills beyond academic learning. It also contributes to SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals by encouraging knowledge-sharing, collaboration and meaningful engagement within the MNU community. The initiative further supports SDG 5 – Gender Equality and SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities by promoting inclusive participation and creating platforms for diverse student voices and leadership.
The MNU Speaker Series – Student Edition provides students with opportunities to learn from the experiences of their peers and other members of the university community. By bringing authentic stories and experiences into the learning environment, the series encourages students to reflect on their own journeys, make informed choices and recognise the opportunities available to them.
Through initiatives such as the MNU Speaker Series, the University continues to strengthen an educational environment where students are encouraged not only to earn academic qualifications, but also to develop the resilience, leadership, decision-making skills and sense of purpose needed to contribute meaningfully to society.
Shadhun’s story left students with a powerful message: we may not always choose the challenges that come our way, but we can choose how we respond to them. Sometimes, the decisions that challenge us most are the ones that make us stronger.
MNU extends its appreciation to Aishath Shadhun Shakeel for sharing her journey and inspiring fellow students to recognise the power of their choices, embrace challenges and continue moving forward.
