The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) conducted a series of mental health awareness and capacity-building activities at GDh. Thinadhoo Campus on 17 and 18 October 2024, engaging lecturers, support staff and students in discussions on mental health and crisis response.
A Mental Health Crisis Management session was conducted for lecturers and support staff at the campus. Facilitated by Aminath Samha in collaboration with staff at GDh. Thinadhoo Campus, the session focused on strengthening staff capacity to recognise and respond appropriately to mental health crises.
The session provided participants with greater awareness of potential warning signs, appropriate supportive responses and relevant referral pathways. Strengthening the capacity of campus staff to respond to mental health concerns can support timely assistance and contribute to creating a safer and more supportive environment for students and staff.
An Open Discussion on Mental Health was also conducted for Nursing students and students enrolled in the Advanced Certificate in Social Services Work at Thinadhoo Campus. The session provided students with an opportunity to explore mental health issues, share perspectives and discuss appropriate ways of seeking and providing support.
The open discussion encouraged a more open approach to conversations about mental health and highlighted the importance of peer and professional support. For students preparing for careers in health and social services, the session also provided an opportunity to consider their potential roles in supporting individuals experiencing mental health difficulties.
Together, the activities strengthened mental health awareness among both staff and students while promoting a supportive campus environment. The initiative reflects FHS’s commitment to extending mental health education and capacity building across its campuses and fostering communities where mental health concerns can be recognised and addressed appropriately.
The activities contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through their focus on mental health awareness and crisis response, SDG 4 (Quality Education) through health-focused learning, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaboration with the Thinadhoo Campus community.
