FSL Legal Clinic Session Highlights the Importance of Ethics in Legal Practice
The Faculty of Shari’ah and Law (FSL) recently hosted a Legal Clinic session on “Regulating Professional Conduct of Lawyers: A Practical Guide for the Modern Practitioner,” led by Dr. Marium Jabeen, PhD.
The session gave law students an opportunity to look beyond legal theory and explore the everyday ethical responsibilities that come with being a lawyer. Through her practical insights, Dr. Jabeen highlighted how integrity, professionalism, and public trust are essential to building a respected legal career.
Students were introduced to important aspects of professional conduct, including maintaining client confidentiality, providing competent and diligent legal services, managing conflicts of interest openly, and handling client funds responsibly. The discussion also considered some of the challenges lawyers face in today’s digital environment, particularly the ethical use of technology and social media.
The session encouraged students to think about the kind of legal professionals they aspire to become and the responsibility lawyers have towards their clients, the profession, and society. It served as a valuable reminder that being a good lawyer involves not only knowing the law, but also exercising sound judgment and maintaining strong ethical standards.
The activity supports Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) by providing students with practical, professional learning experiences. It also contributes to SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) by promoting integrity, accountability, ethical legal practice, and public confidence in the justice system.
FSL sincerely thanks Dr. Marium Jabeen, PhD. for sharing her knowledge and experience with our students and for contributing to their professional development through the Legal Clinic activity series.
