Students enrolled in ENV 111 – Field Techniques at the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS), Maldives National University, took part in a field trip focused on ecological sampling techniques, gaining hands-on experience essential to marine and environmental research.
The field trip formed a core practical component of the ENV 111 course, designed to move students from theoretical knowledge to applied understanding. Throughout the exercise, students learned standardized methods for sampling ecological communities across different habitats, developing skills in data collection, species identification, and the accurate recording of field observations.
Ecological sampling is a fundamental technique in environmental science, providing critical baseline data on ecosystem health, productivity, and biodiversity. By mastering these methods, students are equipped with the practical competencies needed for advanced study and careers in marine science and environmental management.
The hands-on training also emphasized consistency and accuracy in sampling—skills that are indispensable for producing reliable scientific data and informing conservation and management decisions. The field trip reflects CFOS’s commitment to delivering applied, field-based learning that prepares students for the demands of marine research and environmental protection in the Maldives and beyond.
