Building the Future: Civil Engineering Insights from IBM’s Factory

Posted on 1 April 2025

Civil Engineering students from the Faculty of Engineering, Science and Technology (FEST), Maldives National University (MNU), visited Island Beverages Maldives (IBM) at the FEN Building, Malé, for an industrial exposure trip. The visit provided students with firsthand insight into IBM’s operations, including the TaZa bottled water production process, quality control measures, and manufacturing systems, while also introducing workplace safety protocols. Through a guided factory tour, students observed key civil engineering aspects of the facility, such as the RCC structural system, foundation, building planning, lighting and ventilation, construction materials, fire safety systems, and essential building services. The experience strengthened their understanding of how civil engineering principles are applied in the design, construction, and operation of a modern industrial facility, bridging classroom learning with real-world practice.

The industrial exposure trip aligns with SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing students with practical, industry-based learning that connects civil engineering theory with real-world applications. It supports SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) through exposure to bottled water production, quality control, and water-related manufacturing processes. The visit contributes to SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) by introducing students to modern industrial facilities, construction systems, building services, and manufacturing technologies. It supports SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by enhancing understanding of safe, functional, and well-planned industrial buildings and infrastructure. Finally, it advances SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by exposing students to quality control, efficient production processes, and responsible practices within a modern manufacturing environment.
