Building a Culture of Sustainability Across the University Community

14 April 2026

The Policy and Quality Control Unit (PQCU) organised a university-wide sustainability training programme from 8 to 14 April, engaging academic, administrative and support staff across campuses and departments to strengthen sustainability awareness and encourage the integration of sustainable practices into everyday university activities.

Facilitated by sustainability specialist Dr. Ibrahim Mohamed, the programme was delivered in a hybrid format, combining face-to-face sessions in Malé with virtual participation from regional campuses. A total of 335 staff members participated, representing 50.15% of the university’s workforce.

The training focused on strengthening staff understanding of sustainability principles and exploring how these can be integrated into teaching, learning, research, administration and campus operations. By connecting sustainability concepts with practical applications across different areas of university life, the programme sought to encourage staff to take an active role in advancing sustainable development.

Participant feedback indicated increased awareness of sustainability and a willingness to adopt environmentally responsible practices in workplace and academic settings. These outcomes highlight the programme’s potential to translate sustainability knowledge into practical action and support a more sustainability-conscious university community.

The initiative reinforces the university’s commitment to institutional sustainability, continuous improvement and shared responsibility for sustainable development. Through continued awareness-building and staff engagement, PQCU supports efforts to embed sustainability into the university’s culture, practices and decision-making, contributing to progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
