Breaking the Silence: MNU Recognises World Whistleblower Day 2026

23 June 2026 | Malé, Maldives

On World Whistleblower Day, The Maldives National University (MNU) reaffirms its commitment to fostering a culture of integrity, accountability, and transparency  values that are foundational to ethical institutional life and the wellbeing of the communities universities serve. Observed annually on 23 June, World Whistleblower Day is a global moment to recognise the courage of those who speak up against wrongdoing  and to reaffirm the importance of creating environments where such voices are not only heard, but protected and respected.

The Role of Whistleblowers in Upholding Integrity

Whistleblowers play a vital and often underappreciated role in safeguarding ethical standards across organisations and institutions. By courageously raising concerns when they witness misconduct, fraud, abuse of power, or unethical behaviour, whistleblowers serve as a critical line of defence for institutional integrity and public trust. Their willingness to speak up — often at personal risk — helps ensure that systems of accountability function as they should, and that wrongdoing does not go unchallenged or unaddressed.

At MNU, we believe that a strong institution is one where every member of its community feels empowered to raise concerns without fear, confident that those concerns will be taken seriously and addressed with fairness and transparency.

A Culture Where Truth is Valued

Building a culture of integrity requires more than policies and procedures. It requires an active and ongoing commitment from leadership, staff, and students alike to uphold honesty, act with responsibility, and support those who choose to do the right thing even when it is difficult. MNU is committed to being an institution where integrity is practised, not just proclaimed. Where transparency is a standard, not an exception. And where accountability at every level reflects the trust placed in us by our students, staff, and the wider community we serve.

On this day, MNU calls on all members of its community to stand in support of the values that define ethical institutional culture — and to help build an environment where truth is always valued, and where every voice matters.

Supporting the Sustainable Development Goals

MNU’s recognition of World Whistleblower Day connects with the University’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly:

SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions — by championing transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct as essential pillars of a just and well-functioning institution and society.

SDG 4: Quality Education — by nurturing an academic environment grounded in integrity, where students and staff are guided by strong ethical values that extend beyond the classroom.

The Maldives National University remains committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and transparency in all aspects of its operations and institutional culture.
