The Let’s Read initiative conducted a workshop focused on promoting early literacy, strengthening local-language development and improving access to culturally relevant reading materials for children in the Maldives.
Organised by the Maldives Library Association, with support from staff of The Maldives National University (MNU) and funding from The Asia Foundation, the workshop brought together librarians, teachers and community representatives to explore approaches for expanding Dhivehi-language children’s literature and strengthening reading practices among young learners.
Participants shared perspectives on the importance of providing children with accessible and engaging reading materials that reflect their language, culture and local context. The initiative also encouraged collaboration among education providers, libraries, community organisations and volunteers to support literacy development and nurture a lifelong culture of reading among children.
The focus on Dhivehi-language children’s literature also supports the preservation and continued development of local language and cultural knowledge, while providing children with learning resources that are relevant to their communities.
The initiative contributes to SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting early literacy, access to learning resources and inclusive educational opportunities for children. It supports SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by promoting accessible learning opportunities for children from diverse backgrounds. The emphasis on local language, cultural resources and community participation also aligns with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage. The collaboration between the Maldives Library Association, MNU and The Asia Foundation demonstrates SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through institutional cooperation, knowledge sharing and coordinated efforts to strengthen children’s literacy and access to educational resources.
