The Maldives National University (MNU), through its Faculty of Education, proudly celebrated the successful completion of the University of Melbourne (UoM) Global Mobility and Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Programme, marking a significant milestone in strengthening international collaboration, professional learning, and intercultural exchange in teacher education.
The programme provided University of Melbourne students with meaningful opportunities to engage with the Maldivian education system through classroom observations, school visits, interactions with MNU students and staff, and educational, cultural, and community-based activities in Malé and island communities. These experiences enabled participants to gain first-hand insights into the local education context while fostering mutual learning and cross-cultural understanding.
The closing ceremony was graced by His Excellency David Jessup, Australian High Commissioner to the Maldives, and featured an insightful presentation by Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam, Vice Chancellor of MNU, titled “Mathematical Thinking in the Maldives.” The presentation provided an opportunity to explore perspectives on mathematics education and the development of mathematical thinking within the Maldivian context.
A key highlight of the programme was the student capstone presentations and reflections, through which participating students shared their learning, observations, and experiences throughout the programme. The presentations demonstrated the value of experiential learning and highlighted the impact of professional engagement, cultural exchange, community participation, and student leadership.
The programme reflects MNU’s continued commitment to internationalisation and global academic partnerships, creating opportunities for students and educators to learn from diverse educational contexts and strengthen professional networks across borders. Such initiatives contribute to enriching teacher education while preparing future educators to work effectively in increasingly interconnected and diverse communities.
The collaboration also advances MNU’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 – Quality Education, by promoting quality learning and professional development; SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities, through inclusive intercultural learning and greater understanding across communities; and SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals, by strengthening international institutional collaboration and knowledge exchange.
Through initiatives such as the UoM Global Mobility and WIL Programme, MNU continues to build meaningful global partnerships that enrich learning through shared experiences, promote inclusive and quality education, and empower the educators who will shape the future of the Maldives and beyond.
