Associate Professor Dr. Siti Aqlima Ahmad Explores Transformative Bioremediation Across Extreme and Tropical Environments

19th August 2026

We extend our sincere appreciation to Associate Prof Dr. Siti Aqlima Ahmad, Keynote speaker at the 9th Theveli International Conference, for her insightful presentation, “Bioremediation Across Extreme and Tropical Environments: Transformative Innovations for Global Environmental Resilience.”

Her presentation highlighted the potential of indigenous microorganisms, including bacteria, algae, and fungi, in addressing environmental pollution through sustainable, adaptable, and cost-effective bioremediation approaches. Drawing on her research in Antarctica and tropical environments, Dr. Siti Aqlima Ahmad demonstrated how scientific lessons from extreme ecosystems can contribute to practical solutions for pollution challenges in island nations.

Her insights into diesel degradation, bio-absorption, biodegradation, and the use of locally available materials for environmental remediation were particularly relevant to the Maldives and its marine and waste-management challenges. She also emphasized the importance of strengthening research collaboration between Malaysia and the Maldives and highlighted the potential for continued collaboration with the Maldives National University (MNU).

We are grateful to Associate Prof Dr. Siti Aqlima Ahmad for sharing her expertise, research, and valuable perspectives at the 9th Theveli International Conference, and for contributing to meaningful dialogue on advancing sustainable environmental solutions through science, technology, and innovation.
