Biography

Dr. Mohamed Shareef is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Education, Maldives National University. He holds a PhD in Education from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand (2017–2023), with a dissertation titled Higher Education for Sustainability in a Small Island State: A Case Study of Maldives. He also holds a Master of Education from Unitec Institute of Technology, New Zealand, and a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of
Brunei Darussalam.

    Teaching Interests

    Dr. Shareef teaches across the Bachelor of Education and Master of Education programmes, with courses spanning research methods, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Education for Sustainability. His teaching emphasises critical thinking, sustainability competencies, and transformative pedagogies.

    Research Work

    Dr. Shareef’s research centres on Education for Sustainability, with a particular focus on how sustainability is embedded in higher education in Small Island Developing States. His doctoral research examined higher education for sustainability in the Maldives, and his more recent work explores sustainability integration in teacher education, tourism higher education, and architectural design education. He has supervised Masters-level dissertations and mentored students in educational research methodologies, and regularly presents his research at academic conferences and institutional forums.
