Professor Željko Bačić

Biography

Prof. Željko Bačić, born in Zagreb, Croatia, graduated at the Faculty of Geodesy, University of Zagreb in 1986, and took his PhD at the Technical University of Graz, Austria in 1997. Since then, he is teaching Satellite Positioning and related topics at the Faculty of Geodesy in Zagreb and Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Geodesy in Split.

In 1999. he took position in civil service, first as Deputy Director General of Croatian State Geodetic Administration and in year 2000 he was posted for Director General. He was Director General for 12 years, during which time new legislation was adopted, cadastre service reorganized, and comprehensive reform of land administration in Croatia was conducted. Croatian permanent GNSS network – CROPOS and National SDI have been established.

He was active member of EuroGeographics, was member of Management board 2002-2007, and its President 2005-2007, was member of Cambridge Conference Advisory Board 2003-2011, and chairmen of the Management board on regional cooperation in Cadastre in South-East Europe 2007-2012. He is Croatian academic delegate in EuroSDR.

His field of interest are satellite technologies (GNSS and EO), Spatial data infrastructure (SDI) and their implementation in national education, business and governance systems, with emphasis on disaster risk reduction and management.

He was Vice Dean for science and international cooperation in period 2015-2017. He is Croatian representative in Copernicus Committee and presently is in Space Program Committee – Copernicus configuration under DG DEFIS, and member of Reference group for Space of the Croatian Ministry of Science and Education. He is project coordinator or team leader of several Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education – CBHE and Sector Skills Alliances – SSA projects.
