Dr. Waseema Fikuree

Biography

Dr. Waseema Fikuree started her professional career in 1996 at the Ministry of Health. During this time, she participated in various developmental and short-term educational programs. These include programs undertaken in various educational institutions such as the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta, India, University of Reading, UK, and the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. After her Bachelor’s Degree, she worked as a school teacher on an outer island. She joined The Maldives National University (MNU) in 2006. 

Dr. Waseema is multi-disciplinary and teaches subjects in education, educational leadership, economics, business, management, mathematics, statistics, and research. Her research interests include educational leadership and school improvement. The most recent research was Teaching as a career: perception, values, and choice in the Maldives (2022) for UNICEF, and she was the project leader for the study. She has presented her research at various international conferences and published it in academic journals. 

Apart from teaching and research activities, she actively contributes to school curriculum development by developing the Key stage 3 combined business studies curriculum and authoring textbooks. Currently, she is the Dean of the Faculty of Education and represents the Maldives National University in the Teacher Education Panel at the Maldives National Qualification Authority.
