Faculty of Arts of the Maldives National University hosted The 10th Japanese and Dhivehi Language Speech Contest on 19th November 2016 to showcase the speaking skills of students studying Japanese language at the university.
The main objective of the contest was to motivate students to work harder to improve their language skills as well as to promote FA’s Japanese Language courses to the public.
This year’s speech contest, which was held at Faculty of Education’s Auditorium, also featured Japan Overseas Corporation Volunteers (JOCV), who work as teachers in various islands of the Maldives, giving speeches in Dhivehi language to demonstrate their grasp of the local language as well as to share their personal experiences and interactions with Maldivians during their stay.
The Japanese and Dhivehi speeches were assessed by their respective panel of judges. The Japanese Language judges included the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Hon. Kazumi Endo, and Resident Representative of JICA, Hiroshi Saito. The Dean of FA, Abdul Rasheed Ali, also attended the event.
The event was spiced up with some fun activities such as a lively Maldives-Japan fusion dance performed by current and former Japanese Language students, and a Japanese song that was performed by everyone in attendance. The event concluded with the awarding of certificates and prizes to the winners.
The 10th Japanese and Dhivehi Language Speech Contest was organised by MNU and Maldives Japanese Language Learners Community (MJLLC) with Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) as the co-organiser. The event’s main sponsor was Oregano and the co-sponsors were Procure Plus, Shell Beans, The Somerset Hotel and Champa Central Hotel.
Faculty of Arts sincerely appreciate and thank the Japanese language lectures, Ms. Yuka Sasaki, Ms. Zeenath Zaki and Mr. Ahmed Ishaq for their relentless hard work and dedication in organizing this event.
