28th February 2012
At a short ceremony held today in the Central Administrative Office, contracts of appointment were signed with the newly selected deans, heads of centres and the registrar. Deans already in office also signed the contracts which reflect the new terms of employment. New appointments were made for the Faculty of Education, Faculty of Shari’ah and Law, the Centre of Maritime Studies (CMS) and the Centre for Open Learning (COL).
Dr Ali Shareef, a former CSIRO scientist, was appointed the Dean of the Faculty of Education. He has extensive experience as a research scholar and also in education. Dr Abdul Sattar Abdul Rahman, a noted author of fiqh books, was appointed the Dean of the Faculty of Shari’ah and Law. Captain Qasim Mohamed Fulhu, a seafarer of vast experience, was appointed the Head of CMS. Mr Ramiz Ali, the dux of the Dhivehi Degree Class of 2006 and a master’s holder in e-learning was appointed the Head of COL. Both Dr Abdul Sattar Abdul Rahman and Mr Ramiz Ali were Acting Heads of FSL and COL respectively since mid-2011. Ms Aishath Ali was appointed the Registrar. She was an award-winning alumnus of USP and an honours graduate of UWA’s master program in educational management. She held the same position earlier. The positions of the University Registrar and those of the Heads of CMS and COL were permanent track positions before the Council resolved to fix terms so that a “tenureship allowance” can be attached to the positions.
The positions carry a term of four years with an evaluation at the end of two years. The appointments become effective from 1st March 2012. In the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor, Dr Hassan Hameed, thanked the former Heads of the Faculty of Education and the Centre for Maritime Studies, Messrs Abdulla Luthufee and Asim Abdul Sattar for their assiduous service to the Divisions during their terms of office.
